WHAT?
Probably the single best musical thing happening in Oslo this week imho. Mungolian Jetset and Ost&Kjex bring their traditional Christmas party to the much more temperate setting of the backyard of Dattera to Hagen on August 1st. Along with them they have a fab list of artist such as Sandra Kolstad, Anne Lise Frøkedal, Ary, and Melkeveien, plus a selection of some of Oslo’s very best djs. Basically, a one day festival you don’t want to miss.

Hailu Mergia With Tony Buck & Mike Majkowski (Awesome Tapes From Africa, Washington / Berlin)

There’s basically a whole back story here that I don’t have space here to do justice to, so go read about it here or here. But basically we’re talking about Hailu Megia, a living legend of the Ethiopian jazz scene from the 1970s who emigrated to the USA in 1981 to escape the brutal Mengistu regime, and up until recently was making a living driving a cab in Washington, D.C. In 2013, Brian Shimkovitz and his blog/label Awesome Tapes From Africa discovered the obscure  “Hailu Mergia & His Classical Instrument“, on cassette, in a music store in Ethiopia, tracked down the old maestro and reissued it. Subsequent re-releases including Walias Band’s “Tche Belew” (1977), (the much sought after holy grail of Ethio Jazz which has been selling on Ebay for astronomical sums up to 4.000 US $) mean that Hailu Mergia is now back playing live again. With him in on this tour are two leading Australian improvisors : Tony Buck and Mike Majkowski. In addition, eminent funk dj Florian Keller will be playing records. If you dug those Ethiopique compilations you’re going to be in heaven at this event.
